Bentlee and Her Dog.

If you know me, you know that I am not at all an animal/pet person. We never had pets growing up unless you count a couple of hamsters that eventually died or a turtle that ran away. And no, I am not kidding, our turtle ran away. My kids beg for a dog ALL the time. In moments of weakness I might consider it for half a minute, then memories of friends horrible experiences with dogs come flooding back. Stories of dogs throwing up and pooping all over their house. I have heard some crazy stories over the years. And some of my friends are dog lovers and they love their dogs like part of the family. And I can respect that, but if I had a dog and it threw up all over my house...couldn't handle it. Don't hate, just the way I am. Good thing I married a fellow non-animal lover. That being said, for some reason this picture of Bentlee and her dog just melted my heart. I love photographing this girl and her family. For some reason, they make me happy. More of their family tomorrow. My kids our out of school today and we are going to play outside!

Love this kid. Such a fun age. Goal this year...take more pics of my own kiddies. It is sad when I show up to a family event, the only one without a camera. Sometimes, I can't stand to take, upload, and edit one more photo. And part of it too is that I just want to enjoy the moment, rather than trying to document them all the time. Is there a good balance? Ry complains that we don't have any normal everyday pics of the kids. I will try to be better about that this year.

Heather and I originally planned on taking these photos in the orange groves. I can't say how happy I am that we changed it to this amazing location in Scottsdale. It was a bit of trek, but SO worth it. And I think that this location just fits their family "style" much better. Watching this family interact was so entertaining. Derek is such a guy's guy. He is a major sports fanatic and just opened up a new Crossfit gym, which I hear is amazing! Anyone have a New Year's resolution to get fit? I am sure Derek and his coaches could whip you into shape in no time. I want to join, but I am a little scared he won't let me have my Dr. Pepper anymore!?! Anyways, Heather and these three girls have him wrapped around their little fingers. I love that all three of the little girlies have their own uniquely beautiful look. Heather ordered some great prints, I will post her wall display when Heather gets them hung! So excited to see them. Thanks Price family!

This session was a photographer's dream. Perfect setting, perfect outfits, a yellow VW bus, great light, kids oozing with personality. I love great props, but am always worried about them overwhelming the photos. I always want to make the main focus the people and not the prop. I think this worked out perfectly and will definitely be more inclined to do this again. Thanks Tanners for a fun afternoon, your kids are amazing. And Nora, those eyes...I die.

It's Been Awhile.

Geez, I feel like it has been forever since I posted. I have been crazy busy this Fall and just trying to keep it all together. I have been taking this family's photos for about three years now. And they are one of my favorites. Amy is super laid back, Rob is always good for a laugh, the kids are cute, and Amy always had them dressed amazing. Months ago, Amy told me she had her clothes bought and picked out for their session. As it got closer she found this shirt for Ty and changed it all up. I guess she got bored of the old outfits, since she had been staring at them for two months. Sounds like something I would do! Plus I love her oldest boy Tate. He is so cute, and Amy and I secretly have a wedding planned for him and my daughter Kate. Tate and Kate. Cute-huh? Lots more sessions posting soon!

Camera Class!

Anyone out there buy a nice fancy camera and have no idea how to use it? Sick of getting blurry, poorly exposed images? After many requests, my friend Lindsay Brummer and I have teamed up to teach a class on how to use your camera. I shoot Canon and she shoots Nikon, so whichever type of camera you have, we can help you figure it out. So exciting!

James and Brittany got married August 3rd in the Mesa Arizona Temple. What brave souls to battle the heat. But being a girl that got married in August herself, it was no big deal. During my travels this summer, we squeezed in some photo sessions. I can't tell you how fun it was to shoot at new locations. Utah had some really fun spots, and I especially loved this field. The light was amazing! I grew up with these girls. Every summer my family would make the trek to Utah to escape the sweltering heat of Arizona. We spent hours at Bear Lake, sleepovers, and some serious Barbie playing (kind of sad my girls never really got into that). So fun to be able to photograph their families. I will post some pictures of my aunt's and cousin's walls when they get them up. They are doing some really fun displays. (Hint: Lots of circles!)

Maternity...

It has been awhile since I have done maternity photographs, and I was a little nervous going into this photo shoot. Photographing a little out of my comfort zone is also really exciting because it gets the creative juices flowing. I try really hard not to get into "creative ruts" so I was looking forward to this shoot! Lindsey and Brandon are expecting their first little baby in August and asked me to take some maternity photographs as well as photograph their new baby when she arrives. I LOVE the first shot. I always love a great silhouette and last minute before they left, we decided to do this one. Sooo glad we did! I am also slightly obsessed with the sequence shots lately. My sister Amy's family shoot and the subsequent hanging of her wall (see bottom left of her wall) kind of sparked the obsession. I find myself always talking clients into hanging something similar on their walls. We even got a visit from the cops. Someone thought we were dumping the couch in the grove!

This little baby was so sweet and the best little model. She seriously slept the whole time and let me move her wherever I wanted. Photographing all these sweet little babies does make me a little baby hungry. Too bad Ry says no. :) Wouldn't you want one after spending the morning with this little beauty?

I have been taking pictures of this family since little Miss Milee was born. I love photographing these little kiddos. Carrie always has them dressed so cute, she puts so much time and effort into having perfectly coordinated outfits with all the accessories! This is the first time photographing the whole family, it was fun capturing the relationships with mom and dad. And Nani even hopped in for a few! The kiddos were so well behaved, and I think Carrie had a huge sigh of relief when it was over. :) Thanks guys! Your family is beautiful.

P.S. Trent is graduating from dental school this summer, and they get to go to a fancy ball. So we played dress up for a few. :)

So this post has been mulling around in my head for months now. I have not quite been sure the best way to go about doing this? But here goes... As many of you know this past year in May, my fabulous husband lost his job. He worked for a homebuilder and we had been fearful of this for awhile, but actually thought we maybe had scraped by and missed the worst of it. He came home from work around 10 and our lives were turned upside down. At the beginning it was easy to be hopeful. We would tell ourselves that something would come up. Ryan is a great guy and a hard worker, somebody would surely hire him. However, as time went on, hope faded and our faith was challenged. Before I go on, I have to say that we are so lucky to have such wonderful families that were so willing to help and be supportive. So even though it has been really hard, I know that it could have been MUCH worse. I never feared that we wouldn't be able to feed our kids, or have somewhere to live. And I know that unfortunately these are real concerns for a lot of people.

Having said that, it was still REALLY hard. I learned some things about myself that I never knew. For instance, I HATE, I mean really hate, asking for or accepting help from others. I don't consider myself a proud person, I don't ever think that I want to be better than someone else, and I wasn't necessarily embarrassed that Ryan didn't have a job. It's not like I didn't want anyone to know. It was just this really weird thing of feeling "different" from everybody else. It's like everybody had these normal lives and we were on hold, not really knowing what to expect. I can't really explain it. I would much rather be the giver. Christmas was especially hard. When I would go take pictures for families, sometimes I would come home and cry. They would be dressed up in cute clothes and I would help them pick out their pictures and see them hanging in their houses, and I would be sad. I wanted my own family photo, I am a photographer after all. And I haven't had my own family picture taken in 5 years. My mom kept saying, well let's do yours. But the clothes would be expensive and the photos would be expensive. And we just weren't able to spend money on that.

One Sunday I was sitting in church and a lesson that was given really helped to change my perspective. The lesson was on faith. The teacher was relating faith to a seed. She talked about how it is our job to give place for the seed in our heart, but that Christ is actually the one that plants it. She had these clay pots she used as a place to plant the seed. And compared our doubt and fear to turning the pot over. When we doubt and fear, it is comparable to turning the pot over, no matter what is placed there, it will fall and pour out over the edge. For whatever reason, this mental image was so powerful to me, in a way that was a little different than what she was talking about. Here I was in the fetal position under my "bowl" and all the love and generosity that was being offered to me was just running off the edge. (Remember I have a hard time accepting help from others). Friends and family were constantly offering help and I was rejecting it. Now I try really hard when someone is offering help, to think "Turn your bowl over and accept it!" After all, I truly believe Heavenly Father and Christ show their love and help us through others. For my birthday this year I decided to do my family pictures. I set it all up and my sister Amy snapped them, while my mom got the attention of my kiddos. My parents ordered me a 30-inch circle print, that I am sooo excited to get and hang in my house. I am LOVING circle prints. I mean how cute is that! I will post a picture of my wall once it is hung up.

Ok. Enough of the pity party! On to the fun part. I want to give away a session. Actually, two. (Remember, I would rather be the giver:). I really want to bring a little bit of joy into someones life that is struggling. Here are the rules. There are going to be two separate giveaways. This first wall is the wall right when you walk in her front door. We took the pictures a couple of years ago at a park in Scottsdale. We decided to mix canvas with regular prints and frames. I still really love these photos, but we are planning an update this year. (They have since added a new member to their family.) The photos that she has going up her stairs are more recent individual shots of her 5 daughters. Yep, that's right 5 girls. They are all so fun! Each girl seriously has her own unique look and personality. They are 10x10 photos in 24x24 frames. These frames are amazing and look so great going up her stairs. I love the simplicity of all the same size prints and the same frames. Julie-your house is fabulous!

My little niece Maddie is getting baptized next month so I got to take some baptism photos for her upcoming special day. Can I just say that Maddie is one of my favorite people to photograph. I love her piercing blue eyes and her freckles. There is just something about this cute girl. She is so photogenic and always takes fabulous photos. And I can never decide between black and white or color with her. She looks so good in black and white, but I love the color of her eyes. What do you think? She is kind of in the crazy teeth stage-same as my daughter Kate. So her mom tried to help her have a little less toothy grin. Her dad, my brother, tends to not love the serious face photos, he thinks they look too modelish. And as a father of five girls, he has a right to an opinion. So I was a bit nervous of whether he would like these. Luckily he loved them, so we pleased everyone. Yeah! I love it when that happens! Congrats Maddie. Love you girl.

Frames...Want One???

Come on you know you do! The first time I saw these I was dying. Cutest frames that I have seen in a long time. I am now offering these as a really fun and unique way to frame prints. What can I say about Kevy. I still remember when we found out my mom was pregnant with him. My parents gathered us at the kitchen table and told us they had some big news. We immediately started guessing... a new car, we were moving, etc. My mom told us she was prego and this was big news. At the time us kids were 16, 14, and 11. They promptly told us we weren't allowed to tell anybody yet. What!?! We were so excited! The day came that we were finally allowed to share the news. Of course I immediately got on the phone and called my BFF Natalie. My pesty younger sister got on the other phone and tried to tell her before I could. Seriously!?! I guess that is what younger, annoying sisters were for. (You know I love you Ams, and couldn't live without you!) Anyways. I digress. Back to the point. Kevy has brought so much joy into our family. There have been many times that he has entertained us with his stories. Often I tell him to tell me about what is going on in his life, with his friends and school. I say, "come on, my life is boring, I wipe butts all day." (Don't get me wrong motherhood is great.) I am sad that soon he will be leaving for college (hopefully...we still haven't heard from BYU), and shortly after that on a mission. It seems like just yesterday he was singing "Ryan and Lindsey sitting in a tree k.i.s.s.i.n.g." the first time Ryan met my parents. I love you Kev. I know that you have been smothered by multiple mothers, but it's just because we love ya!

These two were so cute and seriously so fun to photograph. We met before the shoot to talk about their wedding and what their plans were. I asked them how they met. Apparently Sam's brother was Colten's mission companion. When Colten got home, in his words, "I saw her and had to ask her out." Sounds like love at first sight! He was so cute with her and obvioulsy so in love with her. I am excited to post others from this shoot, but not sure which they are going to choose for the invitation, so...don't want to spoil anything! Here's a little teaser. LOTS more to come!

OK. So yesterday was one of those days. Nothing in particular. Just didn't have the energy to deal with the mountain of tasks that needed to be accomplished-I seriously over commit in October. It is my favorite month so I want to do all the fun things! So much editing, a dirty house, cranky toddler, and no shower. Anyways, started editing these when my baby napped. You know someone really loves you when, they knew you in highschool (and all the stupid stuff you did) and still talk to you. I have known Bri since elementary school-which means she stuck with me even through those awful junior high years. Is there anything more awful than junior high? Yuck! (On a side note-if you haven't seen the movie Diary of a Wimpy Kid-rent it this weekend-even if you don't have kids. It is sooo funny. They got junior high right on.) And Hailey-I met in highschool when she walked into Mrs. S? What was that English teacher's name? She always let the bball players get away with everything. She had a crush on them (can't say I blame her) Maybe she was the original Cougar. Ha Ha! Anyways...love you girls and your kiddos. They are too cute-if I do say so myself!

Okay-so I am soooo behind on my blog! I have been so busy with a kids, shoots, and a hospital stay, that my blog has just fallen off the list. Here are some of my favorites from my brother's family. He seriously hates doing family pictures. He asked me if I could get good enough at Photoshop that they didn't even have to come-I could just make up the picture in Photoshop! HMMMM! The thing is- his girls are actually really good! And let's face it -Julie does most everything to get them ready-he really just has to show up! HA! The McDonalds are in my ward and I have loved getting to know them better the past year. I was talking to another friend from the ward as I was editing these, and I happened to have Erica's face pretty big on my screen at the time and I commented to her, "Erica is SO beautiful." My friend Camille told me about this fun new place to take pictures. So I took the Larsen family down there about a week ago. I always love shooting at new places, it helps to get the creative juices flowing. I am glad I decided to go there because now they do not let photographers shoot there anymore-which I am so sad about because it is a GREAT location! Heather and Lance have the cutest family! Her boys were so well behaved. I brought along my sis in law, Kim to help out with keeping the kids happy and such, but I think I would have been fine without her-they were so good!

So, I normally do not do weddings. For some reason they intimidate me a little-okay a lot. It is not that I am scared to actually take the photos, it's more what if I get in a freak car accident on the way home and my camera explodes-you just can't get those images back. You can't redo a wedding if something freaky happens. I grew up with the Coates family, and when they asked me to photograph Jenna's wedding, I had a hard time saying no. So I said yes! I am super excited to do this wedding and a little nervous at the same time.
I met up with Jenna and Allen this past weekend to take their engagement photos. I have to admit that it was kind of fun to see Jenna all grown up and getting married. I was really good friends with her older brother growing up and she was always the "little" sister. Not anymore! They are such a cute and fun couple!

These are my cute nieces. I think that Julie and I are sometimes crazy! We decided to take these pictures outside in 100 degree weather. Any sacrifice for a cute picture! I think that Ryan, my brother wanted to kill us. We were all sweating and the girls were troopers! Ryan and Julie sure make cute girls!

Okay so I know that I am biased-but aren't they so cute. I have been wanting to check out this new place to shoot so of course my kids get to play model. I love this location-it offers something different than the standard park, grass, and trees. What do you think?

And this picture of Emma makes me laugh. When did she get so old. I swear she looks like a teenager here. Half of it is the face that she is pulling, but still. A little while after we got there Emma decided to touch a cactus-you know the kind that doesn't look like it has pricklies, but then you touch it and realize that you have a million tiny hairlike needles in your hand. Well she wasn't too happy after that, and neither was I! Hence the face.

Lincoln

Lincoln's mom has so much style and is an artist herself, so I must admit that I was a little intimidated to take pictures of her baby. The fun part was that she was up to anything and we both ended up loving the photos with the zebra print in the background. After we did some photos inside we ended up going over to Agritopia and trying to get a few outside shots. Unfortunately, Lincoln was not cool with the grass. He was like what the heck is this stuff. Luckily we were able to catch some good ones! Thanks Sommer!
